Sky conditions
Cloud Cover and Northern Lights Viewing
A strong aurora forecast still needs a clear sky. Cloud cover is the local filter between space weather and what you can actually see.
Why clouds change the plan
Clouds block visible aurora even when geomagnetic conditions are favorable. That is why city-level guidance should include both space weather and weather data.
The best viewing plan often means finding a nearby cloud break, not simply driving to the darkest location on the map.
Use the clearest window
Aurora Forecast Now looks at near-term cloud cover to surface the best local window. If the score is borderline, a short clear break can still make a camera-first attempt worthwhile.
Quick answers
Can I see aurora through thin clouds?
Sometimes a camera may catch glow through thin cloud, but naked-eye viewing usually needs clearer sky.
Should I drive if clouds are high?
Only if nearby forecasts show a credible clearing window and roads are safe. Space weather alone is not enough.
