Forecast basics

How to Read an Aurora Forecast Tonight

Aurora forecasts look technical, but the viewing decision is usually a simple mix of storm strength, aurora oval position, darkness, clouds, and how far north you are.

Start with location, not only Kp

A high Kp number is useful, but it does not guarantee visible aurora in every city. High-latitude cities can work with lower Kp, while mid-latitude cities usually need a stronger storm and a clear northern horizon.

Aurora Forecast Now scores each city by combining NOAA aurora grid intensity, latitude, Kp forecast, and local cloud cover so the decision is closer to a practical viewing plan.

Check clouds before you drive

Cloud cover can erase a good space-weather setup. A lower cloud number means a better local sky window, but it should still be checked against local radar and road conditions before a long drive.

Quick answers

Is Kp enough to decide whether to go outside?

No. Kp describes geomagnetic activity, but visibility also depends on aurora oval position, latitude, darkness, cloud cover, and light pollution.

What does a city score mean?

The score is a practical viewing signal for the next local night window. It is guidance, not a guarantee.
